Millennium Falcon Mini Quilt

I admit it!  I’m a HUGE Star Wars fan!  If you didn’t know – The Millennium Falcon is the spaceship that belonged to Hans Solo.  Well, it originally belonged to Lando Calrissian – but let’s not get geeky with the details here.  As I was saying…….I’m such a big Star Wars fan that I knew I had to make a Millennium Falcon Mini Quilt when I saw Kristy’s pattern.  It has been a couple years since I came across the Millennium Falcon Pattern by Kristy from Quiet Play.  I immediately fell in love with it because of it’s modern aspect and the many different color options this pattern provides!  Let me tell you all about my Millennium Falcon Mini Quilt!

Assembling the pattern

In the pattern, there are a few main sections to piece together and then you get to join those assembled sections together.  If you’ve never tried FPP (Foundation Paper Piecing) – no fear!  I’ve made a video tutorial (from a basic heart shaped pattern) to show you the fundamentals of this amazing technique.  This video show you about fabric placement and how to follow the numbered patterns (no matter which FPP you are working on)  Check it out!

Finishing the Mini Quilt

I used my Juki Miyabi to quilt this up.  Using this Geometric Quilting Design, to accent the modern aspects of the mini quilt, was an easy choice.

The Starburst Quilt

The Starburst Quilt is a fun and lively pattern that is perfect for the confident beginner!  Even if you don’t have much experience with foundation paper piecing, you can certainly make this amazing quilt!  Jenifer Dick (the creative genius behind 42 Quilts) designed this amazing pattern and I love it!  There are no tricky sections and the center nine patch really anchors the hypnotic optical illusion which surrounds it!  Just think of the color combinations!  This Starburst Quilt pattern finished size is 36″ x 51″ – perfect for a baby quilt.  You can even make more blocks (each block finished sizes are 15″ x 15″) to make an even bigger quilt!  I decided to make (4) blocks to make a really nice wall hanging.  Let me show you all about it!

Starburst Quilt – MATERIALS LIST

  • Nine Patch Revolution (book by Jenifer Dick and Angela Walters)
    • Starburst is just ONE of the patterns in this wonderful book!
  • Main Color (I used what I had in my stash, but if you choose a solid color, I would recommend Paint Brush Studio (PBS) Fabrics – their solids hardly fray at all!)
  • Main Contrast (I used PBS Grey)
  • Backing Fabric (I used up the rest of my main color fabric for this)
  • Binding – I did a fancy flange binding and it turned out great!
  • Quilter’s Dream Supreme Batting (because it’s the best and I love it so much)

Jenifer’s pattern helps get you ready to make this fun pattern.  She gives you the measurements you need for each piece.  The cutting is super easy because you are just using strips of the two colors in a small variety of sizes.  The FPP pattern is very simple.  If you can sew a straight line – this pattern is for you!  I especially loved how the pattern is one page, and not small bits and pieces that you have to connect later.  Granted, you will piece the (4) sections around a nine patch to complete one block – but THAT’S IT!!!  Easy peasy!

Starburst Quilt – Assembly

Jenifer’s book gives really great step-by-step instructions on the assembly process, which is super helpful if you aren’t sure how to pull this all together.  I was fortunate enough to attend a workshop with Jenifer showing us how to put these fun units together!  Once we made each block, Jenifer recommended a basting stitch around the outside edge of each block.  This is to prevent wonkiness (is that even a word?) when you piece the large units together.  Brilliant!

Foundation Paper Piecing Tutorial

Foundation Paper Piecing Tutorial

I love foundation paper piecing!  I think it is the easiest way to get perfect quilt blocks.  Unfortunately, the technique is not as straight forwards as patchwork and requires us to think a little backwards!  I wanted to take the mystery out of the foundation paper piecing technique for you.  Let me break it down for you by showing you what you need and how to do it.  Soon enough you will be wanting to make everything using this technique.

I wanted to take the mystery out of the foundation paper piecing technique for you. I used a free pattern from the Valentines Day Table Runner post.  You can find that right here.  Most of that pattern is patchwork, with the exception of a few end border hearts.  You will find those on page 2 of the pattern.

I am a visual learner and could never figure out how to perfect the FPP technique by reading instructions.  I figured it would be better if I made a video to explain the process.  I hope you find this video helpful!

I just love that little heart block!  I think I might make more and turn them into a cute little Mug Rug!

What would you do with a few of these little blocks?

I just love it when two Guilds come together for a swap.  I was fortunate enough to participate in the Modern Pillow Cover Swap with the Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild (KCMQG) and the Houston Modern Quilt Guild (Houston MGQ).  This swap was organized by the KCMQG committee chair, Daniela Kirk.  Daniela’s counter partner, for the Houston MQG, was Jenn Saxena.  During this swap, we had over 30 participants which accounted for over 60 modern pillow covers being made.  Let me tell you about the Modern Pillow Cover that I made!

When the swap first began, I decided to gather various sources of inspiration.  One of my favorite sources of inspiration is Pinterest.  I created a Modern Pillow Cover Pinterest board and started curating all the images that inspired me.  When I received my partner, I shared this board with her and asked her to choose something that she wanted made for her.  My partner gave me several ideas and this lead  me to the Kwik Jeli Wonky Geese Pattern.  Here is what you need to make your own.

Once I decided on my color design (one of my favorite parts), then I got started sewing!  This project came together quickly and it was fun to use my scraps.  My partner wanted happy and cheerful fabrics.  She liked yellow, orange and red.  Luckily, I have an abundance of scrap fabric, which came in quite useful for this project.

I used my 16.5″ square ruler to trim off the sides and quilted the top with my walking foot attachment.  If you don’t have a walking foot attachment – you should get one!  It really helps to prevent your fabrics from shifting.

I love how this project turned out.  While it is not perfect, I hope that my swap partner will love it as much as I loved making it!

Goosed Up about Rainbows

I love rainbows!  Rainbows remind me of God’s promise and new beginnings.  Not to mention they are beautiful!  When I found out about a Mini Quilt Swap that was themed on rainbows – I was in!  What is a mini quilt, you ask?  A mini quilt is like a regular quilt, only much, much smaller!  The Mini Quilt swap that I joined was called #RainbowMiniQuiltSwap. This swap was hosted by Kate Basti.  A swap host is called a “Swap Mama”.  All swap participants were sent an email with their secret partner’s name, mailing address and basic interest info. This email also contained reminders about checkpoint info and mailing date deadlines. The basic interest info contained the person’s fabric and design likes and dislikes and any other info they decided to include in their submission form. Once I received my partner info, I immediately started trolling her Instagram feed.  My secret partner was an accomplished quilter.  Her Instagram feed was full of lovely creations.  She posted a mosaic, which I used as inspiration for choosing the pattern and fabric for her Mini Quilt.  In her mosaic, I spied the Goosed Up foundation paper pieced pattern by Jeli Quilts.  I was definitely goosed up about rainbows!  Let me tell you what you need to make your own!

Once I got my pattern all printed out, I decided it would be a good idea to make a practice block.  I was still waiting on a few fabrics to arrive from my online orders, so I used my scraps and made this trial block, which is about the size of a coffee cup coaster.  The block was easy to make and my practice piece turned out great!

Paper pieced coaster

Finding all the right fabrics was my favorite part!  I already had many in my own stash to choose from.  For some reason, I was low on yellow and red choices.  I had an abundance of teal and blue (no surprise there)!  I got all my final selections organized and in ROYGBIV order!

Since I had already made a practice block, this one was a lot easier to put together.  It was exciting to watch the mini quilt take shape!  I decided to make the small geese shapes with the darker color and have the shadow of that color be a lower volume of the base.  I love the effect!

In progress Goosed up Rainbow Mini Quilt
Fons And PorterI had seen so many people use a plain white background, so I wanted to make this one a little differently.  I love how this low volume red fabric added a note of interest to the rest of the fabrics!  Once I had the sections all together, I sandwiched this all together and did some very intentional straight line quilting.  I was extremely pleased with the finished mini quilt!

Completed Goosed up Rainbow Mini QuiltFor the backing, I used a fun rainbow dot fabric.  I stumbled upon this at my LQS (local quilt shop).  I had to scoop it up and it turned out PERFECT!

As with all my swap packages, I love to send extras!  Going overboard was easy, but I just love rainbows (I think I mentioned that earlier).  Who doesn’t love handmade goodies!  I covered up my label to hide some sensitive info, but you can get the general idea of my secret partners swap package.  She loved it!  She loved all of it!!!

Complete swap package plus extras for the Goosed Up Rainbow Mini Quilt
I hope you decide to try this fun pattern.  One day, I would love to make an entire quilt from it – it is sooooo good!

If you would like to learn the Foundation Paper Piecing technique, I recommend you reach out to your local quilt shop.  I hope someone there would be able to offer this in a class for you.  If this is not available for you, or if you would like to learn at your own pace – I can recommend this online class.  Mastering Foundation Paper Piecing with Carol Doak.  Carol is the foundation paper piecing BOSS!  I love her books and patterns!

Spring Fling Cover

Spring Fling Mini Quilt

A few years ago, I joined Instagram and started following several creative quilters and sewing enthusiasts.  I found this platform to be a very inspirational source and through this platform, I was actually introduced to many new fabric designers and ideas. I had to learn a little about hashtags and how to use them. After being on Instagram for a few months, I decided to join a Mini Quilt Swap. What is a mini quilt, you ask?  A mini quilt is like a regular quilt, only much, much smaller!

The Mini Quilt swap that I joined was called #SpringFlingMiniQuilt swap. This swap was hosted by Nelma Bell with Beach Baby Couture.  A swap host is called a “Swap Mama”. Since this swap gained a large number of participants, the swap Mama recruited some friends to help with managing the participants.  All the participants were divided into teams.  I was assigned to the “HaveAFlingWithJen team, which was managed by Team Mom Jen Lanak (also known as Quilter In The Closet on Instagram).

The basic interest info contained the person’s fabric and design likes and dislikes and any other info they decided to include in their submission form. Once I received my partner email, I immediately started trolling her Instagram feed.  My secret partner did not have any sewing or quilting pictures on her feed, so I kept an eye out for her mosaic.  This proved to be a challenge because she did not end up posting a mosaic.  Some folks could have found this to be a hindrance, but I saw this as an opportunity for creative license!!!  Since I love foundation paper piecing, I found a great beginner pattern on Etsy and used the Tula Pink collection called Bumble.  I also mixed in my favorite fabric Kona solids by Robert Kaufman.

Happy Cloud Quilt Batting by Fat Quarter Shop

The mini quilt came together very quickly!  I will definitely recommend using Carol Doak’s foundation paper for the pattern.  This makes ripping out the paper SOOOOOOO much easier!  I would also recommend using a special ruler for your trimming.  The Add-A-Quarter ruler makes the trimming so much faster.  It has a lip on it that nests nicely to your project so you can achieve the perfect quarter inch trim each time.

Once I had all four sections of the little quilt pattern sewn together, I joined all the sections to complete my mini quilt top.  I was very intentional about the fabric placement in order to create a nice contrast between the print and solid fabric pieces.

Sulky.com Thread & Stabilizers

For the quilting, I used the “stitch in the ditch” technique around the star pieces.  For the background area, I used a simple meandering style.  I made sure to select a thread color to match the background fabric.  I used quilters dream supreme batting which gives this project a nice thickness and loft.

The 241 Tote by Noodlehead

This post contains affiliate links

Isn’t it nice to have options for the things you need to carry?  Because I can sew for myself, and others, I always have a tote for most occasions!

One of my favorite tote pattern is the 241 Tote, by Noodlehead, which is perfect for everyday use.  This tote is the perfect size for things from grocery items to library books.  This is a rounded style of tote, which is a contemporary change from your ordinary tote bag.  The design also allows for up to three coordinating exterior fabrics.  Choosing the fabric is usually the best part of any project!  This bag also has some hardware requirements and a little list of fabric requirements:

All the pieces are cut out and ready to SEW together!

When sewing the exterior side pocket onto the exterior side, it almost looks like a slipper is progress!

These colors are brilliant all together!!!

Materials needed:

  • 1/2 yard exterior
  • 1/2 yard lining
  • 1/2 yard accent fabric
  • 1/2 yard strap, pockets
  • 14mm magnetic snap
  • Two 5” zippers (optional)
  • 1 1/2 yards fusible woven interfacing

Here is the Finished 241 Tote

A while back, I made this 241 Tote that consisted of Chevron Patchwork Exterior and Linen.  I sent that tote off to an Instagram friends as a part of a swap I had entered.  In fact – that was my first ever swap!  Such a fun tote to make!  I love anything Rainbow!!

Patchwork Chevron cut into pattern shape

Side pockets

Rainbow Chevron 241 Tote with Linen accents and strap

Now that I remember back – I have made several of these totes as swap gifts!  This one was for an Outlander Swap.  Outlander is the name of the first novel in my favorite book series = Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon.

Attaching the sides to the front and back pieces. Lots of pins!

I added a fun tag to the interior pocket. It really didn’t take “forever”, but it sure made for a cute sentiment!

I easily fell in love with this fabric by Katarina Roccella. I was very intentional about the pattern placement and even added the two optional zippers!

The last swap tote that I made was for a swap partner in Wichita Kansas.  She loved action figures and her favorite Super Hero was Iron Man.  I found a free paper pieced pattern and incorporated this into the exterior panel of one of the sides of her tote.  I was really pleased with the result and my swap partner was thrilled!

There were a TON of pieces in this IronMan project!

This came together quicker than I expected

If you love the look of this tote, and would like me to make you one – just send me a message!  I would love to help you pick out the perfect fabrics!

Here is where I got the fun “THIS TOOK FOREVER TAG

Here is a quick video to help you install your magnetic clasp!

Here are a few things you will need to make this tote!

The pattern creator is Anna Graham.  Her company is called Noodlehead.  Her pattern is called 241 Tote.  Anna writes a wonderful pattern, which is very easy to use!

Can you just imagine this tote being made in your favorite colors and fabric designs?  You can make seasonal totes, totes as gifts and ‘sew’ many more options!  I can’t wait to make another 241 Tote!
