Quilty Resolutions: Make This Year Your Best Yet!
The new year is here, and it’s the perfect time to set goals for your quilting hobby! Whether you want to tackle unfinished projects, learn new techniques, or simply make more time for the craft you love, setting intentional Quilty Resolutions will keep you inspired all year long.

Resolutions aren’t just for breaking bad habits—they’re an opportunity to build creative momentum and rediscover the joy of quilting. With a little planning, you can organize your projects, learn something new, and connect with others who share your passion. Here are some ideas to spark your creativity and help you make this your most productive and fulfilling quilting year yet.
Use Your Fabric Stash
If your shelves are overflowing with fabric you’ve “saved for the perfect project,” this is the year to start using it! A great first step is to take a fabric inventory, which will help you rediscover forgotten gems hiding in your stash. Sorting your fabric by color, theme, or size can make planning future quilts easier and more efficient. Plus, a clear view of what you already have can stop you from buying fabric you don’t need—saving you money and space.

Need help getting started? Check out my fabric inventory method here. Challenge yourself to make a quilt using only fabric from your stash this year. You’ll be amazed by how creative you can be with the materials already at your fingertips!
Finish Your UFOs
We all have them—those UnFinished Objects tucked away in closets and drawers. This year, one of your Quilty Resolutions can be to tackle your UFO pile once and for all. Start by gathering all your unfinished projects and assessing what’s left to do for each one. Break them down into manageable steps, such as piecing blocks, quilting, or binding, and make a plan to finish one at a time.

Sometimes, projects are abandoned because we lose interest, but finishing them can be a great way to clear mental and physical space. I’ve shared a practical system to help you stay organized and make progress on your UFOs here. Finishing these lingering projects will give you a huge sense of accomplishment and motivate you to start fresh with new ideas.
Sew for Charity
This year, consider making one of your Quilty Resolutions to sew with purpose by creating quilts for charity. Giving back to your community through quilting can be deeply rewarding, whether you’re making quilts for hospitals, shelters, or specific causes. For example, making a Quilt for a Cure is a meaningful way to honor loved ones affected by cancer.

Start small by choosing one organization or event to support, and set a goal to complete a quilt by a specific date. Not only will you brighten someone’s life, but you’ll also be sharing your passion for quilting in the most heartfelt way possible. Sewing for others gives each quilt a story and purpose, making the creative process even more fulfilling.
Learn a New Quilting Technique
Quilting offers endless opportunities to learn and grow, so why not challenge yourself to pick up a new skill this year? Whether it’s trying foundation paper piecing, mastering curves, or experimenting with appliqué, learning a new technique can reignite your excitement for quilting. If you’ve never tried foundation paper piecing before, it’s a great method for creating sharp, precise blocks.

My beginner-friendly tutorial here will walk you through the basics and help you get started. Adding a new skill to your quilty toolbox will not only boost your confidence but also open the door to new patterns and creative possibilities. Make it your goal to complete at least one quilt using this new technique—it’s a resolution you’ll be proud of achieving!
Join a Group Quilting Project
One of the best Quilty Resolutions is to join a group quilting project, such as a Quilt-A-Long. Quilt-A-Longs (QALs) are a fun and organized way to accomplish a quilt project while connecting with others who share your passion. You’ll work on the same pattern with other quilters, share progress, and celebrate your finished quilt top together.

Not to mention, some QALs offer fun prizes that can add a little extra motivation! If you’re interested, I host regular Quilt-A-Longs that you can check out here. Joining a QAL is a great way to stay accountable, meet new friends, and enjoy the satisfaction of finishing a quilt alongside a supportive community.
Attend a Quilt Guild Meeting
Another wonderful way to inspire your quilting journey this year is by attending a quilt guild meeting. Quilt guilds are full of talented, creative people who share tips, ideas, and inspiration. Whether you’re new to quilting or a seasoned pro, you’ll learn something new and leave energized to tackle your projects. Many guilds also host guest speakers who share their knowledge and stories, which can be a huge source of motivation. I’d love to speak at your next guild meeting—check out the lectures I offer here.

Attending a guild meeting is the perfect way to connect with your local quilting community while sparking fresh ideas for your next quilt.
Visit a Quilt Show
If you’re looking for inspiration, make it a goal to attend a quilt show this year. Quilt shows are an incredible way to see award-winning quilts up close, check out the latest quilting trends, and meet quilters you’ve only seen online. Walking through the exhibits will leave you inspired and full of creative ideas for your own projects. Plus, quilt shows often feature vendors showcasing the latest tools, fabric collections, and notions. I’ll be attending several quilt shows this year—you can see where I’ll be here.

Visiting a quilt show is not only fun, but it’s also a great opportunity to grow your skills and your quilting network.
Connect with Quilters Around the World
This year, consider connecting with quilters near and far by joining a quilt swap. Swaps are a fun and exciting way to share your work with others while receiving something handmade in return. Whether you’re swapping quilt blocks, mini quilts, or fabric, participating in a swap allows you to meet fellow quilters and be part of a worldwide creative exchange. I host quilt swaps regularly, and you can learn more about how to get involved here.

Joining a swap can spark fresh inspiration, challenge you to try new designs, and help you build lasting friendships. Plus, it’s always exciting to receive a little piece of someone else’s creativity in the mail!
Make More Quilty Friends
Quilting is more fun when you share it with others, so make connecting with other quilters one of your Quilty Resolutions. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced quilter, joining a group or community can inspire you and help you stay motivated. A great way to start is by joining the Quilt Block Club, where you’ll meet other quilters who share your passion and creativity.

Being part of a group allows you to swap ideas, share progress, and celebrate finished projects together. It’s also a chance to ask questions, learn from others, and find support when you need it. Building friendships through quilting not only adds fun to your hobby but also creates a strong sense of community that lasts for years.
Make More Time for Quilting
One of the most important Quilty Resolutions you can make is to prioritize your quilting time. Life gets busy, but setting aside dedicated time for your hobby can do wonders for your creativity and well-being. Consider booking a quilt retreat this year to focus solely on quilting without distractions.

Retreats offer a chance to work on projects, learn new techniques, and spend quality time with fellow quilters. I’ve shared some great reasons to join a quilt retreat that will inspire you to sign up. By carving out time for quilting—whether it’s a weekend retreat or just a quiet hour each day—you’ll enjoy a sense of calm, satisfaction, and productivity.

Oh, how I would enjoy coming to a quilt retreat, but we are seniors and don’t drive very far anymore. How I do miss them as they are such fun. Meet, or, get to know each other better because there are no time restraints. It’s nice to just get away and do what & when you want. No chores like at home. Etc! Ahhhhh. ggg
