How I Made the June Tailor Hanging Towel Kit

If you’re looking for a quick, satisfying, and customizable sewing project, the June Tailor Hanging Towel Kit is a fantastic choice. This kit has everything you need to create a functional and stylish addition to your kitchen—or a thoughtful handmade gift.

Recently, I made one using a mix of fabrics from my stash, and it was such a fun process. Let me take you through how it went and why I’ll definitely be making more of these.

Gathering My Tools and Supplies

The first step was getting everything together. The June Tailor Hanging Towel Kit includes instructions, a towel, and a pre-printed piece of batting for the top section of the towel. To make it my own, I selected a few fat quarters from my stash that matched my kitchen decor.

I also gathered my favorite tools, including:

  • My Juki DX-4000 QVP sewing machine, which makes sewing projects like this a breeze.
  • The Oliso TG 1600 Pro Plus Smart Iron in the Tula Pink edition—it’s gorgeous and so effective for pressing fabric.
  • Premium Quilting and Crafting Spray, which I love for starching and keeping fabric in place.
  • Basic sewing tools like pins, scissors, and my cutting mat.
  • Velcro for the closure, although you could easily swap it out for buttons or snaps.

Once I had everything laid out, I was ready to start creating.

Preparing the Fabric Pieces

Following the instructions, I pre-cut the fabric pieces for the towel top. The first thing I tackled was the decorative trim for the bottom of the top section. I folded the trim pieces in half with the wrong sides together and pressed them neatly with my iron. The Oliso made this so simple—it’s one of those tools I can’t live without.

After pressing, I stitched the trim pieces to both the front and back sections of the towel top. Then, I placed the front and back pieces right sides together, aligned the edges, and pinned everything in place. At this point, I added the pre-printed batting template on top, which came with the kit.

Using the lines printed on the batting as a guide, I sewed around the shape. I sewed directly on the line. After sewing, I trimmed away the excess fabric to about a ¼ inch from the stitching line and clipped the corners to make turning easier. Once the edges were prepped, I flipped the piece right side out and gave it a good press to smooth everything out.

Customizing the Towel

While the kit’s towel is great as-is, I couldn’t resist adding some custom touches. I started by enclosing the raw edges with a simple straight stitch to give it a polished look. Then, I created a decorative trim for the bottom of the towel using fabric from my stash.

Here’s how I made the trim:

  • I cut a strip of fabric, folded the edges inward, and used my favorite starch to hold them in place.
  • After pressing the fabric with my Oliso iron, I sewed it onto the bottom edge of the towel.

This small detail added so much personality to the finished project. Once the towel was trimmed and ready, I folded it to fit neatly inside the towel top. Then, I sewed it in place securely.

Adding the Closure

The last step was attaching the closure. I chose Velcro for its simplicity, but there are plenty of other options depending on your style.

Snaps, buttons, or even ties could work. After securing the closure, the project was complete!

Why I Love the June Tailor Hanging Towel Kit

This project was the perfect mix of easy and creative. The June Tailor Hanging Towel Kit takes the guesswork out of the process with its pre-printed batting and clear instructions, but there’s still plenty of room to make it your own. Whether you’re adding decorative trims or playing with different fabrics, the possibilities are endless.

What I really love about this kit is how practical the final product is. Hanging towels are so handy in the kitchen, and they make great gifts for family and friends. Plus, they’re an awesome way to use up fat quarters or scraps from your fabric stash. If you’re a seasoned sewist or just looking for a quick project, I can’t recommend the June Tailor Hanging Towel Kit enough. It’s fun, functional, and totally customizable. I know I’ll be making more of these—how about you?
