This quilt is easier than it looks and is an easy sew to add some festive flair to your decor. Whether you’re a seasoned quilter or just starting out, this pattern is a delightful project that you can complete over a weekend. The finished quilt measures 58″ x 72″.
Choose Your Pattern Format
There are three different options for the Friendly Phantoms Quilt Pattern: Digital PDF, Paper Booklet, or Online Course. Each format is designed to cater to different preferences and learning styles. The Digital PDF is perfect for those who like to have instant access and prefer working from a digital device. The Paper Booklet is ideal for those who love having a physical copy in their hands, making it easy to follow along without screen distractions.
We highly recommend the online course since it offers the best of everything – an instant pattern download combined with step-by-step video instructions for each part of the quilt top construction. The videos provide clear, detailed guidance that can help you navigate through any tricky parts, making the entire process smoother and more enjoyable.
Friendly Phantoms Fabric Requirements
The fabric requirements for the Friendly Phantoms Quilt are flexible, allowing you to use your favorite Halloween yardage or fat quarters for the ghosts. This versatility means you can personalize your quilt with a variety of prints or stick to a color scheme that suits your style. The ghosts look fantastic in classic Halloween prints, but you can also achieve a striking modern look with solid fabrics. I used THIS FABRIC KIT to make my modern quilt.
For those who enjoy a scrappy look, fat quarters are a great choice. Mixing and matching different prints can give each ghost its own unique personality. Check out the Fabric Requirements table for exactly what you need. Don’t forget to have fun with your fabric selection – the more playful, the better!
Ghost Construction
The quilt features four different ghost designs, with five of each ghost to complete the quilt. This project is perfect for assembly line quilting, a method where you complete all similar tasks together before moving on to the next step. Once you’ve finished all your cutting, you can sit down and sew each ghost in no time.
The differences in each ghost block come from the eyes and mouth, giving each ghost a unique personality. You can experiment with different expressions to make some ghosts look surprised, happy, or even a little spooky. This customization adds a lot of character to your quilt and makes it truly one-of-a-kind.
Split Quarter Square Triangle (SQST)
This pattern introduces the Split Quarter Square Triangle (SQST), a fun and slightly challenging technique used at the bottom of each ghost block.
The SQSTs remind me of the ghosts in the classic arcade game, PAC-MAN. If you remember Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde, you’ll appreciate this nostalgic nod. Using a ruler with a 45-degree marking is helpful for trimming these blocks accurately, ensuring that each ghost’s shape is perfect. I like using THIS RULER for trimming my blocks.
If you’re new to the SQST, don’t worry – the online course provides a detailed video tutorial that walks you through the process. This step is not only functional but also adds a playful touch to your quilt, enhancing its overall charm.
Quilt Top Assembly
Once all the ghosts are assembled, it’s time to sew the quilt top together. The quilt includes sashing rows between each row of ghosts, with cornerstones between the sashing. This layout gives each ghost its own space to “dance” upon the quilt top, creating a balanced and visually appealing design. I used my Juki DX-4000 QVP to piece this quilt top.
The pattern includes access to a coloring sheet to help you plan your layout. This tool is incredibly useful for visualizing your finished quilt and ensuring that your fabric choices work well together. You can experiment with different arrangements and color combinations until you find the perfect look.
Finishing the Quilt
How you finish your quilt is entirely up to you! I chose a lovely edge-to-edge design that I programmed into my Juki J-350 Quilting Machine. The quilting design adds texture and depth to the quilt, enhancing its overall appearance. For the binding, I used a striped fabric, which added a perfect finishing touch. The stripes provided a nice contrast to the quilt top and tied all the colors together beautifully. My friend also created another version of the Friendly Phantoms Quilt – she used a variety of scraps to make her version truly fun!
You can also consider other finishing touches like hand-quilting for a personal touch or adding embellishments like buttons or embroidery to the ghosts. These little details can make your quilt even more special.
