Modern Christmas Tree Quilt

I have always wanted to make a Christmas themed quilt!  Since I am a member of the Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild, I really wanted to make it MODERN!  I am fortunate to belong to a very active and exciting guild.  We have some really fun programs that encourage group activity.  One of these activities is called Block Lotto.  Last Christmas, the group made Holiday Patchwork Forest Blocks.  Even though I didn’t win the Block Lotto, I was still excited to make my own Modern Christmas Tree Quilt.  Let me show you my quilt and explain how the Block Lotto works.

The Block Lotto idea came from the Calgary Modern Quilt Guild, where they decided upon a pattern and a color theme.  Our guild is very fortunate to have Kelly Lautenbach, who is our very own Guild Cruise Director!  Kelly keeps a close eye on fun things to do in the guild and she began this activity for the guild.  Kelly helped us decide on the pattern and the color layout.  It was important to name the color grouping so that the blocks would look good together.  For this Block Lotto, we used the tutorial by Amy Smart from Diary of a Quilter.

To have a Block Lotto, we have participants make a block (or a group of blocks) and bring them to the meeting.  We gave a raffle ticket for each block that was turned in.  We brought several design walls to the meeting and arranged as many quilt with the blocks that were turned in.  Since the color theme was the same for everyone, the quilts looked fantastic! Our members made 374 blocks which we separated into FIVE sets of blocks to make quilts and 13 sets of 4 blocks each for pillows. What fun we had. And our winners were thrilled!

Finishing my Modern Christmas Tree Quilt

As you can see, I was not a block lotto winner.  Whomp Whomp.  That didn’t stop me from making my very own Modern Christmas Tree Quilt!  I have to admit that I didn’t finish this until the next Christmas, but I did manage to trade a few block with some quilty friends along the way.  To be honest, I probably wouldn’t have finished this quilt unless my Local Quilt Shop (The Fabric Chic) hadn’t hosted a workshop.  It’s like they just knew what was on my UFO list!!!

During the workshop, I was able to finish all my blocks and sew all the rows together.  I could have made my quilt top bigger, but I decided to add a larger border.  I used Moda Grundge Seeing Stars in Key Lime.  That really brought out all the green in this quilt.  The stars in the fabric were just perfect too!

I quilted this all up on my new Juki Miyabi J350QVP.  If you haven’t seen all the things my new machine can do – you should go check out my blog post and learn all about that!

Modern Christmas Tree Quilt binding and backing

Finishing this quilt top, before Christmas, was a special treat!  I love to add seasonal decor to my home and this quilt is perfect for evening snuggles!  I hope you found inspiration in this post and perhaps share the Block Lotto idea with your sewing group as well!  Be sure to follow The Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild’s Facebook Page to keep up to date on all the exciting activities!

Happy Quilting!

Alison Glass Trunk Show

I have always been a fan of Alison Glass.  Since I started following her, Alison has continued to create beautiful designs for fabric, wonderful Quilt patterns and even makes embroidery designs! In case you didn’t know…. Alison Glass is a surface designer living in Virginia with her husband, daughter, and son. She currently designs fabric for Andover Fabrics and has several collections available. I feel like I spent an entire year with Alison, since she was the Featured Designer of my 2018 Quilters Planner! I was recently invited to the 2018 Fall Festival at Missouri Star Quilt Company. The Alison Glass Trunk Show was on the schedule and I could not wait! Most of you know that I live a little over an hour from MSQC, so I was thrilled to attend!

Alison Glass Trunk Show - Nicole and Alison

Alison and I pose for a picture at her Meet & Greet. Alison is such a sweet person! I can’t wait to see what she designs next!

Since it isn’t everyday that Alison comes to the Midwest – we (a group of Modern Quilt Guild Members) decided to either carpool or meet in Hamilton Missouri. There was a full day of activities planned (let’s not even talk about the amount of shopping that happened) and the Alison Glass Trunk Show was scheduled for 10am.  Alison gave a great talk to the audience and showed us many quilts that were made with her various lines of fabric.  Let me show you one of my favorite quilts!

The Feathers Quilt pattern was based on Alison’s Feathers fabric design from Sun Print 2014, this large scale version of the design uses foundation paper piecing for a precise finish. Fourteen block templates can be arranged as shown or in any other distinctive combination. Simple shapes, detailed instructions and color illustrations make this pattern a great introduction to foundation paper piecing.

There were many questions after Alison’s Trunk Show and one of them was, “Why do you use grey or darker colors as a background?”  Alison explained how the saturated colors are able to shine through with the darker background (as opposed to white or cream).  Although, Alison did also say that a white background does look really nice with this the Feathers Quilt as well!

The Quilt Show

There was a Quilt Show just next door to the Alison Glass Trunk Show.  Not only did Alison bring a bunch of quilts for her Trunk Show, but she also brought many others to display in the Quilt Show.  It was really great to be able to get up close to her quilts.  The colors are truly amazing.  I love the depth and saturation!

I’m not sure which background that I like the best!  There is definitely something wonderful about both quilts.  It’s amazing how the background fabric can truly change the look of the quilt!

Alison Glass Trunk Show - Quilt Kit

If you are thinking of making this exact quilt for yourself, there is a Quilt Kit available.  As with all designer fabrics, the quantities are very limited!  Get your Quilt Kit HERE.  Your Quilt kit also include the pattern.  Yay!

If you just want to play with Alison’s lovely Sun Print Fabric Collection, you can check your local fabric shop!  If they don’t carry it – ask them to!  You can also purchase yardage and pre-cuts online.

The day was full of friends, fun and fabric!  I was able to briefly visit with Alison and found her to be a very sweet person.  You can learn more about Alison and her products by visiting her website:  www.alisonglass.com  I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next!

Have you ever purchased Alison Glass fabric?  What did you make?  Let us know in the comments!

The Baby Ooo Quilt

The Baby Ooo Quilt is a modern and fun project!  One of our neighbors was getting ready to become a first time Grandma!  She asked for a quilt to match her soon to be Grandson’s nursery.  My inspiration for the Baby Ooo Quilt was from the full sized version of the Ooo Quilt I had finished a few months ago.  The Ooo Quilt was chosen from one of my Missouri Star Quilt Company Block books.  This was from Volume 1, issue 4.  In the book, this quilt was called “Jump Rings”.   I chose some really great, limited edition, fabric.  Let me show you all about this quilt so you can make one too!

This fun and simple baby quilt is a modern design. THE Baby ooo QUILT – MATERIALS LIST

THE baby ooo QUILT – SUPPLY LIST

  • Sewing Machine with a quarter inch presser foot
  • Cotton Thread (I recommend Aurifil 50 wt)
  • Rotary Cutter with sharp blade (no kidding about a sharp blade)
  • Acrylic Ruler
  • Cutting Mat
  • Iron & Ironing Board
  • Sewing Pins or Wonder Clips

Be sure to check out my Amazon Shop to get all your Quilty supplies!

THE baby ooo QUILT – ASSEMBLY

Be sure to get yourself a copy of the Block Magazine.  In the pattern, you will find all the details for assembly.  The process is really simple.  Instead of using a jelly roll, I just cut up my fat quarters as show in the pattern.  Deciding upon the layout was fun.  It took me several times to finally settle upon a layout!

Deciding on a quilt layout is always fun. Learn how to make this cute baby quilt - It's fun and easy! #forbeginners #easy #jellyroll #ideas #modern #baby #ToMake #Designs #Simple #Blocks #Tutorial #HandQuilting #Big Stitches #Embroidery #quilting #sewing #handmade #GiftForBaby #FreeMotionQuilting #Project #Patchwork #Contemporary #WalkingFoot #DIY #Fabric #BabyBoy #BabyGirl #Nursery #Bedding #SewMuchMoore #SewMuchMooreInStore #Hip #Trendy

I numbered my rows, after I decided on the layout.  That really helps me to keep things straight when I get the blocks back to the machine for sewing.

TIP:  I used the following video tutorial as a general guide for assembly:

THE 000 QUILT – ALMOST FINISHED!

Once I had my quilt top assembled, I decided on some simple stitch-in-the-ditch quilting.  It’s simple and fun!  Be sure you have a Walking Foot!  There are different kinds of Walking Foot attachments, based upon the shaft of your specific machine.

I used my Walking Foot to quilt this baby quilt. Check out how the finished quilt turned out - It's fun and simple! #forbeginners #easy #jellyroll #ideas #modern #baby #ToMake #Designs #Simple #Blocks #Tutorial #HandQuilting #Big Stitches #Embroidery #quilting #sewing #handmade #GiftForBaby #FreeMotionQuilting #Project #Patchwork #Contemporary #WalkingFoot #DIY #Fabric #BabyBoy #BabyGirl #Nursery #Bedding #SewMuchMoore #SewMuchMooreInStore #Hip #Trendy

I also wanted to add a “special touch” to the quilt, so I added some Big Stitches with some special 12 weight thread from Aurifil.     I didn’t use a hoop because my quilt was already quilted.  I just added some big stitches on the inside boarder of each “O”.  What do you think?

I love how the Big Stitch Quilting turned out. It was fun, relaxing and simple to do! #slowsewing #forbeginners #easy #jellyroll #ideas #modern #baby #ToMake #Designs #Simple #Blocks #Tutorial #HandQuilting #Big Stitches #Embroidery #quilting #sewing #handmade #GiftForBaby #FreeMotionQuilting #Project #Patchwork #Contemporary #WalkingFoot #DIY #Fabric #BabyBoy #BabyGirl #Nursery #Bedding #SewMuchMoore #SewMuchMooreInStore #Hip #Trendy

Once I sewed on the binding, I could not wait to take some pictures of this amazing quilt!  I was also a little late in getting this to my neighbor, so I headed to the backyard and snapped this completed picture.  I think it is too cute!  And I will definitely be adding big stitches to more projects in the future!  Making this Baby Ooo Quilt was fun and easy!  I just loved making it and my Neighbor loved the result!  Yay!

This baby quilt is super fun and easy to make! This modern quilt is perfect for a quick gift. #ForBeginners #easy #jellyroll #ideas #modern #baby #ToMake #Designs #Simple #Blocks #Tutorial #HandQuilting #Big Stitches #Embroidery #quilting #sewing #handmade #GiftForBaby #FreeMotionQuilting #Project #Patchwork #Contemporary #WalkingFoot #DIY #Fabric #BabyBoy #BabyGirl #Nursery #Bedding #SewMuchMoore #SewMuchMooreInStore #Hip #Trendy

If I were ever to make this quilt again, I think I might try one for a baby girl.  Just think of the fabric possibilities!  I hope you make one of these quilts.  What fabrics would you choose?  Let me know in the comments below!

Happy Quilting!

The Ooo Quilt

The Ooo Quilt is a modern and fun project!  This is another custom quilt I made for a very lucky High School Graduate!  The Ooo Quilt was chosen from one of my Missouri Star Quilt Company Block books.  This was from Volume 1, issue 4.  In the book, this quilt was called “Jump Rings”.   We decided to use the school colors (orange and black), so the quilt could also pose as a Halloween Quilt.  The school mascot is a Pirate, so the skull and crossbones fabric worked out perfectly!  Let me show you all about this quilt so you can make one too!

Once I had my quilt top assembled, I drove to my friend’s house to rent some time on her wonderful long arm quilting machine.  Once you use a long arm quilting machine – it’s difficult to go back to quilting on your domestic (just sayin’).  I know everyone doesn’t have a long arm option, so you can always use free motion quilting on your domestic.  It’s simple!  Be sure you have a Darning Foot!  There are different kinds, based upon the shaft of your specific machine.  I always love my time with my friend’s long arm machine!  I would love to have one of my own, but I have NO ROOM!  Maybe someday!  Until then, I hope to keep Tia Curtis as a close quilty friend!  She is so helpful and wonderfully talented!  She even took this fun picture of me (with the pile of quilts I accomplished in one day)!

The Hashtag Quilt

Sometimes, I make commissioned quilts.  It is not very often that I do this – simply because it is very expensive for the customer.  I had a customer request that I make a quilt for their son, who would be graduating from High School.  We looked through quilting magazines and she decided upon The Hashtag Quilt.  Let me tell you all about it!

  • Qty (.5) yards of Fabric for the binding (I just used my black yardage and cut the strips a little wider)
  • Fabric for backing

The Hashtag Quilt – assembly

I definitely found the Stripology ruler to be a MAJOR time saver for this quilt!  So many cuts of the same size!  I also highly recommend that you use a 1/4″ quilting foot (be sure you get the right one – tons of choices for different machine shafts).  There is tons and tons of chain piecing, so be sure to wind lots of bobbins too – or you can cheat and get the pre-loaded bobbins.  I won’t tell – hehe!

Hashtag Graduation Quilt - Make this fun and modern quilt! Watch the video and use the tutorial and make your own! #DIY #Quilt #ModernQuilting #HashtagQuiltBlock #HastagQuilt #StripologyRuler #ContemporaryQuilt

I created 2 kinds of strip units.  The first strip set was white/black/white and the second set was black/white.  I sewed these together and then cut them to size.  I sewed black strips perpendicular to create the hashtag.  I followed the instructions in the following video to create the remainder of my quilt top.  Check it out!

The Hashtag Quilt – almost finished!

Making this Hashtag Quilt was fun!  There were times when I had to give my eyes a rest (all that black and white can make you dizzy).  But in the end, I just loved it and so did my customer!  Yay!
