Cut and fuse all fabrics, according to your cutting directions.  Align and clip your zipper, right side facing the right side of your first fabric panel.  Make sure your zipper head is facing the fabric.  Using your zipper foot attachment, sew the zipper tape to the panel.  Fold-down the zipper tape to the back of the fabric panel and secure it with a line of stitches.  Align the other side of your panel to the top of zipper tape and clip in place.  Sew your second fabric panel to the zipper tape.  Fold-down the zipper tape to the back of the fabric panel and secure it with a line of stitches.  While your project is still inside out, unzip your zipper about halfway.  Fold the sewn fabric panels ends so that the center of the bottom is in the middle and the zipper is aligned on top of that.  Align and secure the raw edges together and insert the pull tab on the closed zipper end.  Repeat that step for the other side (except insert the lobster clasp and tab on this end) and sew the raw edges closed.

Taking your boxing template, draw cut lines on all four corners of the project.  Using your sharp fabric scissors (these are the BEST scissors), cut out the corners.  Trim off the excess zipper tape.  Align the handle in the middle of the boxed corner.  Use clips to secure.  Repeat for the other end of the handle.  Sew these edges closed.  Make sure you backstitch at the beginning and end of each side.  It is also a good idea to backstitch the handle area as well since this is a high use area.  Repeat on the other side of the bag.  Turn your finished exterior bag right side out.

Make your own pencil pouch – Supply List

  • Sewing Machine
  • Cotton Thread (I recommend Aurifil 40 wt)
  • Rotary Cutter with sharp blade (no kidding about a sharp blade)
  • Cutting Mat (I am using THIS MAT for this project)
  • 505 Fabric Spray Adhesive (I fused my batting to the back of my exterior fabric)
  • Seam Roller (I use this instead of an iron)
  • Sewing Pins and Wonder Clips

assembly instructions

  • Firstly, cut off both ends of your nylon zipper.  Be sure to move the zipper head to the middle.  Next, take your zipper tab piece and cut this in half.  Secure the zipper tabs on each end of your zipper, using clips.  Sew the zipper tabs to the zipper tape ends.  For an in-depth tutorial of zipper tabs, check out THIS ARTICLE.
  • Secondly, place the front of the exterior fabric piece, right side up.  Place the zipper along the top raw edge, the wrong side down.  Clip in place and cover this with the interior fabric piece.  Clip all together and sew along the top edge with your zipper foot.  Be sure to secure this side with topstitching.
  • Next, follow the same steps on the back side of the pencil pouch.
  • Finally, OPEN YOUR ZIPPER!  (This is important).  Secure the exterior and interior pieces together (right sides together) and secure with clips.  Sew along the entire perimeter of the project, but leave a 3-4″ opening on the middle of the interior fabric side.
  • Now you can flip your project right side out and sew the opening closed
Sewing Tip!

You will be sewing through many layers when you get to the zipper junction.  I like to take it slow at this point and use a chopstick to help the fabric through.

I created a YouTube tutorial to help you learn to make your own pencil pouch.

Colored Pencils Mug Rug WP Blog Header

Scrappy Colored Pencils Mug Rug

One of my good friends asked me to make her some mug rugs.  She was looking for a “Back to School” theme and I came across the perfect pattern!  The Colored Pencils pattern by Kristy Lea of Quiet Play is a fun and easy foundation paper piecing pattern that is just perfect for using up your precious scraps!  I am a HUGE fan of Kristy’s patterns.  She totally gets the need for fun and contemporary patterns.  She even has quite a few modern patterns as well!  At the time I made this project, her Colored Pencils pattern was free.    Let me show you all about the Colored Pencils Mug Rug that I made for my friend Janelle!

If you have been quilting for a little while, it does not take much time to start accumulating scraps of fabric.  I love the fabrics that I buy and tend to keep many of the scraps that are generated with my various projects.  This project was fun to make because the scraps reminded me of all the past project I originally made!  Using some selvage edges, I added to the pattern along the bottom of the mug rug.  I think that really “MADE” the mug rug!

Colored Pencils Mug Rug - Finished 1

I highly recommend you try this pattern.  It is super fun and easy.  If you need some help with foundation paper piecing, I recommend you take this online course by Carol Doak.  She is an excellent virtual instructor!  I finished this project off with some leftover binding from a previous project.  I didn’t cut into any new fabric to make this fun Mug Rug!  My friend Janelle loved her new Mug Rug!

I had a hard time remembering all the names of the fabric that I used in this mug rug.  If you recognize one and know the name of it – please leave me a comment below!

Happy Stitching!
