Spring Fling Mini Quilt

Looking for inspiration, I stumbled upon the Spring Fling Mini Quilt swap while scrolling through my Instagram feed. As a quilter and sewing enthusiast, I was immediately drawn to the creativity and community surrounding this event. Through this platform, I discovered new fabric designers and learned about the art of hashtagging to connect with like-minded makers. For those unfamiliar, a mini quilt is a downsized version of a regular quilt. Joining this swap was a no-brainer, and I was excited to be a part of it. The Spring Fling Mini Quilt swap was hosted by Nelma Bell of Beach Baby Couture and gained a significant following, requiring her to enlist the help of other quilters, including Team Mom Jen Lanak (also known as Quilter In The Closet on Instagram) to manage the participants.

Learning about my Swap Partner

When I joined the Spring Fling Mini Quilt Swap, I was excited to be a part of it. After I received my partner’s name and mailing address, I was eager to find out more about her. Unfortunately, her Instagram feed did not have any sewing or quilting photos, which made it a bit challenging for me to get inspired. But I didn’t let that discourage me!

Instead, I decided to tap into my creative side and showcase my skills. I found a beginner foundation paper piecing pattern on Etsy, and I used Tula Pink’s Bumble collection and Robert Kaufman’s Kona solids to make the mini quilt. As I pieced each block together, I experimented with different techniques and textures to make it unique.

Even though I didn’t have a lot to go on initially, I found myself becoming more invested in the project as I worked on it. I tried to incorporate my partner’s interests wherever possible and let my creativity take over. In the end, I was really happy with how the mini quilt turned out, and I felt like it was a true reflection of my style and my partner’s preferences.

The mini quilt came together very quickly!  I will definitely recommend using this foundation paper for the pattern.  This makes ripping out the paper SOOOOOOO much easier!  I would also recommend using a special ruler for your trimming.  The Add-A-Quarter ruler makes the trimming so much faster.  It has a lip on it that nests nicely to your project so you can achieve the perfect quarter-inch trim each time.

Piecing the Mini Quilt

Once I had all four sections of the little quilt pattern sewn together, I joined all the sections to complete my mini quilt top.  I was very intentional about the fabric placement in order to create a nice contrast between the print and solid fabric pieces.

For the quilting, I used the “stitch in the ditch” technique around the star pieces.  For the background area, I used a simple meandering style.  The thread I used blended with the background.  Quilter’s Dream batting was the perfect choice of batting for this project. The leftover batting scraps were the perfect size and the loft showed the dimension of my quilting!

I counted down the days until we were allowed to ship off the mini quilts.  I made sure to send my package with a few little notions and goodies. Who doesn’t like extras?!?!  Believe me, it was difficult to send this off to it’s new home!  My secret partner posted this picture and was pleased with her swap package.  I love a happy swap partner!
